In the tradition of the large pavilions that once anchored the social life of many 19th century beach towns, the Shoals Club on Bald Head Island serves as a place for families and neighbors to come together and enjoy seaside pastimes. Completed in the summer of 2004, the Shoals Club, with its oceanfront clubhouse, dining areas, lounge, fitness room, shower and locker facilities, swimming pools and direct beach access, is the perfect complement to the Bald Head Island Club.

Located near the legendary Cape Fear Point, the Shoals Club takes its name from the sandy “Frying Pan Shoals” that extend some 20 miles from the cape. The club’s broad, wraparound porches will present dramatic views over this part of the Atlantic Ocean, including the unusual phenomenon of watching the sun both rise and set over the ocean.

Architecture Appropriate to Its Grand Setting

The Shoals Club is designed to create a classic architectural presence worthy of its dramatic setting. On the club’s South Beach side, a covered porch opens onto a series of cascading terraces that descend to a spacious lap pool, spa and shallow children’s pool. The tiered approach allows parents lounging on the porch to watch their children swimming in the pool, while still enjoying views of the ocean. In all, the Shoals Club offers a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse, along with 20,000 square feet of porches, pools and decks.

Families are drawn from the pool area to the shore’s edge by a private wooden boardwalk that extends from the clubhouse directly to Bald Head Island’s South Beach, while a second nearby public boardwalk leads to East Beach. For members’ convenience, towel service is offered at the pool, and chairs and umbrellas are available to take to the beach.

Facilities and Amenities

A spacious dining room on the club's second floor offers splendid views of the Atlantic and a delightful dinner menu featuring regional seafood specialties. A separate dining area may be reserved for parties and private functions, while al fresco meals can be savored on a covered verandah facing South Beach.

Additionally, a casual grill menu presents a variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers and soups, and a full-service bar and lounge that specializes in frozen drinks opens onto a covered porch overlooking East Beach. Seasonally, a bar on the pool deck offers hot and cold food along with a variety of cold beverages. Regular poolside cookouts and buffets bring even more dining options, along with a chance to enjoy live music, breathtaking sunsets and socializing with fellow members. For dining reservations, please call the Shoals Club hostess station at (910) 454-4850.

On the club’s first floor, you’ll find a small fitness room with workout equipment, as well as separate men’s and women’s locker rooms equipped with bathroom, shower and dressing facilities, making it easy for members to change out of a swimsuit after returning from the pool or beach. And, convenient gated parking is available on the club grounds.

Additionally, a Shoals Club Activities Center located across from The Common at Cape Fear Station provides a satellite venue for children’s day camps and teen gatherings.
